July 5, 2024 - Biopsy at Chinook Regional Hospital

Today is the biopsy. I am very scared. I spent most of the day sitting alone in an anxious silence.

I went to the hospital with my parents around 12:30ish p.m. and I was told to go to the Day Surgery area. I was given a gown and robe, which I changed into. After that, I made my mom take pics of me in them so to alleviate my anxiety about what was going on.





When it was finally time for the biopsy, a nurse walked me into the O.R. and I was asked to lay on the table. I was given some medicine to numb my neck and they then did an ultrasound of the neck and then once that was over, they did the biopsy. I listened to the medical staff talk to each other and I also counted the pricks to keep my mind off of the needle. They ended up doing 3 shots of 5 pricks each and 4th shot was 10 pricks. I was also told the lump is same size it was at the ultrasound and in the thyroid. When they finally let me out of the O.R. with a bandage over the area and aftercare instructions,  I walked out of the operating theatre and my papa and brother were there with my mother and we all walked out together as a family.

October 30 - Results of bloodwork

I went to the lab and got my bloodwork for TSH levels on the 22nd of October and I got a call from Dr. Uys today about them. He said they finally got that result back from Calgary and there is nothing concerning, so I had a benign nodule with no signs of cancer and my TSH is in the normal range. All I will need, he said, is a repeat of bloodwork in 6 months and that can be taken care of by my GP.  I am blessed.

October 10, 2024 - Results of the surgery!

I met with Dr. Uys today and I received the results of the pathology that was taken when I had my thyroid and the tumor removed. Dr. Uys said it was just a big goiter, but there is still a pathologist in Calgary reviewing the case because there's some abnormal looking cells, not cancerous cells, but abnormal looking cells called metaplasia. Metaplasia means cells that look a little bit different than normal cells, but they don't look like cancer. Dr. Uys also told me what they took out during surgery - my thyroid, the goiter tumor, and on one side, they found one parathyroid and transplanted it on the other side, and found another one and left it as is. Two of the four were so low that they left alone.  All I am supposed to do now is have my blood drawn on the 22nd of October. I went to the mall afterwards and I had a big cry, deeply relieved that it was not cancer because I didn't want it. I saw how it beat the heck out of my biodad and I did not want it. .

April 15, 2024 - Results of the ultrasound

The results of the ultrasound came back. I saw them on Alberta Health's website before I went to the doctor, but the story is the same... They recommend a biopsy because it was a "concerning nodule in the RIGHT lobe classified as a TR4 and fine needle aspiration biopsy is recommended. The lump the patient is feeling is the nodule in the RIGHT lobe of the thyroid gland." I googled what a 'fine aspiration needle' is and it goes into your neck and takes cells. It is a day surgery procedure and it terrifies the hell out of me.
